Denise Jannah and Amina Figarova, at Cranleigh Arts Centre, on Saturday, 3rd March review

Despite earlier fears most of the seats at Cranleigh Arts Centre were filled and lucky people that we were too. Artists of such calibre usually only sing and play at large venues such as Ronnie Scott's Club, or the Royal Albert Hall.

Denise casually sipped her tea and chatted to the audience in between singing some wonderful old standard songs such as 'What a Difference A Day Makes' and 'Favourite Things', in her wonderfully smooth, relaxed, jazzy style. 'Fly Me To The Moon' was appropriate as there was a lunar eclipse in progress at the time. A very bluesy 'Stormy Monday', accompanied by some very funky grand piano playing by Amina.

Denise also sang a new song in her native Surianamese, which sounded
marvellous. It was a truly great evening and rounded off well, as we were able to purchase CDs afterwards from Denise and Amina, who kindly autographed them for us.

I am now looking forward to seeing the Paul Cox Band at Cranleigh Arts Centre this coming Saturday (17th March).

Smooth jazz at Cranleigh Art Centre this Saturday 3rd March

I am a crazy live music fan. I enjoy going to lots of live music gigs and concerts every year. I now intend to keep a blog about these live music gigs and concerts that I go to.

My musical tastes are chiefly blues, jazz, 60s and 70s popular music.

The next live music show that I am looking forward to and am very excited about is on

Sat 3 March DENISE JANNAH & AMINA FIGAROVA £13 adv, £15 door

Stunning vocals with superb accompliment from these international jazz stars.
Denise Jannah - Blue-Note recording artist Denise Jannah is a honey-voiced jazz singer, with inventive phrasing and impeccable diction, who ranks alongside the late, great ladies of jazz, ie Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, etc. Originally from Suriname, South America, Denise now lives in Holland, where she is established as one of their top jazz singers, and is twice winner of an Edison Award (Dutch equivalent of a Grammy). She has appeared at major jazz festivals throughout the world, and has performed at many prestigious functions, including to President Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and Queen Beatrix. http://www.denisejannah.com
Amina Figarova - A classically trained concert pianist from Azerbeidjan (formerly part of USSR), Amina was a child prodigy, who at the age of 6 was admitted to a school for musically gifted children. After graduating as a concert pianist, she won a competition for best composer in USSR. Following a programme on Moscow Radio that featured her music, she was invited to study jazz at Rotterdam Conservatory, and later at the Thelonious Monk colony in USA. Amina is a breathtakingly talented pianist and a prolific composer, with 11 albums and one DVD to her name. Her album `Come Escape with Me’ recently reached No 7 in the USA jazz charts.

Please do come along, if you are able to, as it will be a such a good show. I have been listening to some of Denise Jannah's CD's and have discovered that she has an absolutely wonderful voice. She is not to be missed and well worth travelling for!

Cranleigh Arts Centre is a great small venue. Cranleigh is a small town a few miles to the south of Guildford, in Surrey.

I will post a review of this concert next week. I will also post some reviews of some previous gigs that I have enjoyed. My tastes are diverse so they will include Eartha Kit, The Blues Band, The Manfreds, Otis Grand and Bill Hurley and the Enforcers, Bill Wyman & the Rhythmn Kings, Petula Clark, Johnny Mathis, Paul Simon, Tom Jones, James Brown, Joe Brown and Neil Sedaka.

I travel many miles every year to go to gigs and concerts of my favourite artists and bands. This is because my local town of Haslemere rarely has anything on to my taste. I used to go to Guildford Civic regularly, but since that closed I have been a live music nomad! I drive my husband crazy, as he is not a modern live music fan!

I have recently discovered that Cranleigh Arts Centre is a very friendly live music venue, but it is only staying open with the help of local volunteers. It needs more supporters and regular sell out gigs and concerts to help it survive.

Future artists and bands that I am going to see are The Blues Band, The Manfreds, Albert Lee & Hogans Heroes, Paul Cox, Bob Dylan, 10CC, Dolly Parton, Bo Diddley, Paul Jones & Dave Kelly, Joe Bonamassa, Michael Ball, Michael Bolton, Chris Farlowe, Sharrie Williams, Don McClean, Lionel Richie, The Michael Roach Band, James Taylor, Dr. Hook, Art Garfunkel, The Temptations, Joan Armatrading, Diana Ross, Ray Davies, Simply Red, The Zombies, and The Four Tops.

Watch this blog for news of great live music in the Surrey and London areas!

I am wondering if there is anyone out there who is as crazy about live blues, jazz, 60s & 70s music as I am?
